THE Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA), has sued for collaboration with the state Ministry of Health in its fight against quackery in the profession.
The association noted that the alleged quacks are moving from place to place in the state, using free eye examinations to defraud unsuspecting members of the public, including giving wrong prescriptions and medications to patients.
Chairman of the Edo State NOA, Dr. Charles Eguavoen, stated this during a press briefing which was part of activities of the association’s general meeting in Benin City
He advised members of the public, including institutions to always confirm the practising licenses of eye care practitioners before engaging them.
“The state chapter of NOA encourages all individuals residing in the state to visit the nearest eye clinics and get their eyes tested.
“We appeal to the state Ministry of Health to join the association in the fight against quacks who move from one church, local government primary health centres or schools to the other using free eye examinations to defraud people and giving wrong prescriptions and medications.
“The public should be aware that individuals now move around with fraudulent non-government organisations (NGOs) to deceive the masses,” Eguavoen said.
The association commended the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, for his support, especially the recent employment of 11 optometrists in the state.
Eguavoen, however, appealed to the governor to increase the number of intern optometrists yearly in Edo, especially as more optometrists had been deployed in rural areas in the state.
He also appealed to Governor Obaseki to provide accessible roads for all government hospitals and pay special attention to the Edo State Specialist Hospital, Ossiomo, Organ Road and the Oragn Mixed Secondary School.
In their separate remarks, Dr. Amadin Linda and Dr. Adesuwa Agbontaen, said the association is poised to bringing quality eye-care to the people and advised the people to always go for regular eye checkups.
