The National University Commission has approved the commencement of Medicine and Surgery, Anatomy, and Physiology programmes at Veritas University, Abuja.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Hyacinth Ichoku, who disclosed this on Thursday, said that in spite of the challenging economic situation in the country, the University has continued to make progress in leaps and bounds.
In a letter to students and parents marking the Christmas and New Year break, Prof. Ichoku, said the university would continue to build on its achievements so far in order to fulfill it’s aim of being one of the best universities in the country.
“Yet in all these, we don’t forget to count our blessings” he noted.
He noted that the university has also seen significant improvements in infrastructure and facilities which earned it approval from the National University Commission to commence programmes in Medicines and Surgery, Anatomy, and Physiology.
The NUC approval was extended to postgraduate programmes such as M.Sc. and Ph.D. Entrepreneurship, PGD, M.Sc., Ph.D. Computer Science, Ph.D. Educational Management, Ph.D. Guidance and Counselling, Ph.D. Management, and Ph.D. Public Administration.
According to the Vice Chancellor, from a relatively low population of 1200 students in 2018, the university now boasts of over 5000 students accommodated within the Campus saying the growth was “a big leap”.
The VC in his letter said through its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and human capital development, Veritas University has attracted partnerships with renowned global institutions and corporations such as the African Development Bank, Swedish Embassy, Huawei, and CISCO to equip students with digital skills.
These, he added, are in addition to the general university Entrepreneurship programme which is compulsory for every student.
He said the programmes spanned fashion designing, making confectioneries and weaving.
“The idea is that students that graduate from Veritas University should be ready to start their own businesses on graduation. Parents should constantly ask their students which skills they have acquired as they prepare for life outside school,” the VC said.
Speaking on other milestone attained by the University, the Vice Chancellor said following an outstanding performance in the Pan-African Debating Championship, Veritas University will be representing Africa in the World Universities Debating Championship to be held in New York in April 2024.
“Preparations are already in top gear for another excellent outing by our students in the global championship. These outstanding performances reflect the depth of intellectual formation our students are receiving at all levels,” he said.
Drawing the curtain on the 2023 Christmas message, Fr. Ichoku lamented the economic hardships crippling families and institutions in Nigeria.
“We realise that many families are not meeting up, and indeed many have been left behind. Many do not even know that it is Christmas!
“We pray that the Almighty God who has enabled us to survive 2023 will create a better 2024 for us,” he added.
