The National Union of Mining Labourers (NUMW), Niger State branch, has expressed its support for the state government’s establishment of a Taskforce on revenue collection.

Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, Chairman of the NUMW in the state, made this announcement during a press briefing in Minna on Monday. He noted that the government has entrusted revenue collection to two companies: MARUFAWA Concept and Project Limited, which will oversee revenue collection in Chanchaga, Shiroro, Munya, Bosso, and Suleja local government areas, and KIFFMA Company, which will manage Magama, Mashegu, and Rijau LGAs.

Nasko called on union members to cooperate with these companies, particularly the business community in Minna market. He emphasized that the union has been tasked by the state government to support this initiative, which aims at the overall development of the state.

The NUMW Chairman highlighted the union’s efforts to connect with members across local governments to facilitate the work of the taskforce. He assured that the union is open to any project that promotes development and increases government revenue, provided they receive the necessary legal mandate.

Nasko also pointed out that while over 500 mining companies operate in Niger State, fewer than 200 have registered with the state authorities. He expressed concern that companies new to this responsibility may lack the necessary guidance and knowledge.

However, he assured that the union would provide support and guidance to ensure successful implementation of the revenue collection efforts. Nasko praised the state government’s support and commitment to improving the mining industry.

“The consultants will help the state government identify problem areas,” Nasko said. “With the lifting of the embargo, we are confident that if the government supports the taskforce, it will effectively monitor and generate revenue.”

He added that compliant mining companies and labourers who follow union regulations will continue to work without fear of interference or arrest.

During the Taskforce inauguration, Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba noted that while over 500 companies are registered, more than 200 have identified themselves with the state government. He assured that the union will work to enlighten companies about state laws to ensure compliance and security.

Regarding the upcoming local government leadership election within NUMW, Nasko announced that application forms would be available at the state union’s Secretariat starting September 19. He encouraged those interested in running for local government seats to obtain these forms.

Nasko also commended Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago for his efforts to alleviate challenges in the mining industry by temporarily lifting restrictions, with the expectation of a complete removal in the future. He urged union members to support Governor Bago’s administration and pledged full cooperation with the revenue collection companies to achieve their objectives without obstruction.
