The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has tongue-lashed the Tajudeen Baruwa leadership of the union, saying it failed to sustain the successes achieved in the past and the standards of operation of the union.
Rising from its Central Working Committee (CWC) held in its headquarters in Abuja, NURTW, in a communiqué signed by the National Chairman Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Tajudeen Badiru Agbede, said Baruwa failed to abide by the constitutional provisions with respect to succession.
In full, the communique said, “The Central Working Committee (CWC) of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), held at the National Secretariat of the Union on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, we, the undersigned, having the mandate of our members in the various States and Zones, unanimously passed a VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE on Alh. Tajudeen Ibikunile Baruwa for the many atrocities he committed while he served as President of the Union from August 2019 to August 2023 for the following reasons:
“He reduced membership of the Union in International Transport Federation (ITF) from 400,000 members to a paltry 160,000 members. With respect to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and ITF, he failed and/or neglected to pay affiliation dues as and when due, thus causing the union to be deregistered from ITF.
“In a letter referenced NLC/NS/A.16 dated August 27th, 2019, the NLC wrote to NURTW commending the union for showing “good example to other affiliate unions of the NLC by continuing to be financially up to date” and for “being financially up to date as of the end of July 2019″.
However, there are various letters received from NLC during Alh. Tajudeen Baruwa’s administration that demanded payment of affiliation dues; at one point, they were owed for as long as 18 months (April–December 2021) and January–September 2022.
“He failed and/or neglected to account for INEC money paid during his administration for the 2023 general election. Against the usual practice, which started in 2015 and continued during the 2019 INEC engagement, the union memorialised the engagement with the purchase of a vehicle named after the INEC chairman, as at the time of the elections, the former president had nothing to show for the 2023 INEC election. In fact, many officers, states, and partners (NARTO) who participated in the exercise have yet to be paid their 10% administrative charge for monitoring the exercise.
“Against the constitutional provisions of Article 10(2) of the Union’s constitution, which requires that the National Executive Council (NEC) shall meet every six (6) months, Mr Tajudeen Baruwa, for the 4 years of his administration, only held 4 NEC meetings!
Between the periods of September 2019 and May 2021, he held one at Osogbo on April 12, 2021. In 2022, he held one in Bauchi State on December 14, 2022. In 2023, he held two: one on January 31, 2023, at the Blue Spring Hotel, Abuja (for INEC engagement?) and the last one on May 18, 2023, at Kano, Kano State (for his re-election purpose).
“He arbitrarily mandated the posting of union staff without concomitant relocation allowances or transfer claims and cleared off the savings of staff in their cooperative account, thus causing unnecessary hardship and adversity to staff.
“He failed to abide by constitutional provisions in respect to succession by refusing and/or neglecting to conduct credible Zonal Delegate Elections for the continuity of the Union, thus putting the Union into unnecessary drama before right-thinking members of the public.
“He breached the constitutional provisions of Article 3(5) of our Constitution (under Aims and Objectives), which provide for the advancement of the education and training of staff and members of the Union.
For the 4 years of Mr Tajusdeen Baruwa’s administration, there were no organised trainings for staff and members’ self-improvement, very unlike previous administrations where regular trainings and workshops were organised locally, nationally, and internationally.”
