Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has demanded an immediate refund of an N1,000 deduction, labeled, “Special Union Deduction,” reportedly taken from Kwara state teachers’ October 2024 salaries.

In a statement addressed to teachers in the state, the NUT Principal Assistant Secretary-General, Moni Mike Modesty Itua, said that the deduction was allegedly carried out by the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) without consultation or authorization from its affiliated unions, including the NUT.

The statement clarified that the deduction was executed unilaterally by the state NLC leadership.

He said the NUT and other affiliates of the NLC have since requested that the deducted amount be promptly refunded to all affected workers.

Itua expressed regret for the tension arising from both issues of the minimum wage implementation and the alleged unauthorized N1,000 deductions.

The statement assured members that the union is committed to addressing the matters with transparency, urging teachers to remain calm and patient while resolutions are pursued.

Addressing concerns surrounding the recent implementation of the new minimum wage, Itua noted that the union is collaborating with labour and relevant government agencies to verify the status of the minimum wage adjustments and seek swift resolutions.
