THE Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II, has approved the installation of Mr Noghayin Imawagheru, as the Head (Odionwere) of Urumwon community in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

The development is coming five years after the former community head, Pa Johnson Agbontaen, joined his ancestors.

The monarch granted the approval for the installation of Imawagheru, who was formerly the second-most-elderly man in the community, having been screened and considered as the most eligible senior elder.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that approval was occasioned by a subsisting decision of the traditional ruler who was said to have resolved that the Duke of Irhue N’ Owina village in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state has no authority to oversee the affairs of community, which he said is not part of Irhue N’ Owina Dukedom and, accordingly, urged concerned authorities to take note.

The royal father’s directive was conveyed through a statement endorsed by Mr Marley Iyamu for secretary, Benin Traditional Council (BTC) marked BTC. A40/VOL.LVV/447 and dated May 2, 2023.

The statement stated that the Head of Urumwon pays homage to Oba of Benin’s palace and warned the Duke of Irhue N’ Owina to desist forthwith from claiming Urumwon as part of Irhue N’ Owina Dukedom.

After the approval for his installation, which sparked a wave of euphoria, elders of Urumwon community alongside the youth took turns to pay tribute to the Benin throne, just as they sang and dance with their families and well-wishers.

Speaking to Nigerian Tribune, Imawagheru thanked the monarch for finding him worthy of the position and promised not to betray the confidence reposed in him by the traditional ruler.

He said: “I do not want fight or disturbances in our village. I won’t intimidate or harass anyone with security agents.”

On their part, Mr Friday Omoregbe (the now second-most-elderly man), Mr Michael Egbenehikhuere and the youth leader of Urumwon village, Mr Eseosa Iguebor, stated that they are grateful for the honour and acceptance by Oba Ewuare II.

The elders who were joined by other elders from the village, promised to liaise with the palace regularly and assist the Odionwere in developing the village as well as Edo State.
