The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, honoured Afrobeats megastar Rema with a royal plaque on Thursday.
The presentation took place at the Oba’s palace as Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, visited ahead of his highly anticipated homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
Earlier in the week, Rema participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Edo Arena, where Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, announced that the new 6,000-capacity arena would be named the Rema Dome in recognition of the singer’s contributions and achievements.
Rema, who hails from Benin City, has been a notable ambassador for Edo State, frequently celebrating the city and the heritage of the ancient Benin Empire through his music.
His latest hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, serves as a tribute to his hometown.
In the song, Rema expressed his pride in promoting the kingdom, saying, “Na we be the pride of Benin
Oba sef suppose give us medal.”ALSO READ THESE TOP STORIES FROM NIGERIAN TRIBUNE
