Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced a major initiative to support the state’s transport sector amidst recent fuel price increases.
In a meeting with transport unions, the Governor revealed plans to introduce 100 brand new 18-seater Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for use by local transporters.
This initiative aims to alleviate the impact of rising fuel prices and ensure fair transportation pricing.
Additionally, the Federal Government will contribute 20 CNG-enabled buses and 500 CNG conversion kits to Ogun State within the week.
This support is part of the Presidential CNG initiative and the broader Energy Transition Program.
The Governor emphasized that the new buses, specifically Toyota Hiace models, will be provided under a purchase agreement, allowing transporters to pay in installments.

He assured that these buses will be utilized responsibly, given the transport unions’ commitment.
An enforcement committee, including the State Police Commissioner, Department of State Security Service (DSS), Traffic Compliance Agency (TRACE), and representatives from transport unions and relevant ministries, will oversee the implementation of these measures.
Governor Abiodun also highlighted the need for a balanced approach to transport fare adjustments, noting that recent fuel price hikes should not lead to disproportionate fare increases.
He called for a dialogue to ensure that fare adjustments remain proportional to changes in fuel prices, aiming to prevent excessive fare increases of up to 1000% seen in the past.
The state government is also preparing for the conversion of vehicles to CNG, leveraging Ogun State’s role as a major conversion center for the Southwest. The conversion kits are expected to arrive within five days, marking the beginning of this important transition.
This comprehensive approach by the Ogun State Government is intended to mitigate the effects of fuel price volatility on both transporters and the general public, promoting a more stable and affordable transportation system.
