The Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbagbu, disclosed on Wednesday that the introduction of learners’ identification numbers in both public primary and secondary and private schools in the state has indeed instilled discipline in pupils and students.
Arigbagbu said this at the Pre-Resumption Stakeholders Meeting for the 2nd term of the 2023–2024 academic session, which included principals and headteachers of schools and representatives of various security agencies, that the LIN and the signing of undertakings by parents had made pupils and students to be of good conduct.
The commissioner said there have been minimal cases of misbehaviour among students in all schools in the state in recent times.
Arigbagbu enjoined parents and guardians to cooperate with school administrators in inculcating good morals in their children and wards for a better society.
He said, “The introduction of learners’ identification numbers has assisted students to be well-behaved in the schools.
“I want to appeal to you about the need to make the pupils and students know their LIN. We need you, our principals and headteachers, to help us maintain government policies in our schools for progress.”
The commissioner charged the principals and the headteachers to be up and doing their assignments by playing supervisory roles in the day-to-day running of their schools.
While adding that the state government is considering the construction of perimeter fencing in all the schools across the state to ensure the safety of lives and property.
“The government is aware of some of the challenges confronting our schools, and it is considering the construction of perimeter fencing in all our schools to secure lives and property.
“Principals and headteachers must secure the schools by having a good working relationship with members of the community within which their schools are located,” he added.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Security Matters, AIG Sola Subair (rtd), said the schools can only be secured when there are regular engagements with all stakeholders.
He stressed the need for the inclusion of security education in the school curriculum.
Others in attendance at the meeting were the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr Femi Majekodunmi; the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Education, Science, and Technology; and the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs Abosede Ogunleye and Mrs Melutia Ogunremi, respectively, among others.
