Ondo State Government, on Tuesday, tackled the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its position on the declining health sector in the state, saying the party and its leaders are completely out of touch with the realities on the ground in the state.

The state government while reacting to the state PDP’s position on the health sector, said the criticism was targeted to score a cheap political score, saying the party certainly has the right to state its position on issues that concern the state.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Ondo State on Strategic Communication, Allen Sowore, said the trend of professionals leaving Nigeria for better opportunities is not peculiar to the state.

Sowore faulted the PDP’s claim that doctors ignored the recently concluded recruitment exercise because of the state’s entry-level salaries and medical professionals migrating to neighbouring states like Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, and Kwara for better working conditions.

He, however, stated that, for clarity’s sake, it is essential to state that Ondo State’s health sector is far from being in a bad state.

Sowore said, “PDP leaders seem unaware of the full payment of hazard allowances to health workers, the approval and implementation of full CONMESS (Consolidated Medical Salary Structure) for doctors, and the construction of new surgical and medical wards at the Mother & Child Hospital in Akure.

“They also appear ignorant of the newly constructed oxygen plant at the State Specialist Hospital in Okitipupa and the establishment of the Ondo state contributory health commission, which aims to provide universal health coverage for all residents.

“At the very least, the PDP should be aware of the successful implementation of the ‘Abiyamo Maternal and Child Insurance Scheme’, fully funded by the state government.

“This scheme covers pregnant women and children under five, with over 46,741 beneficiaries and total deliveries of about 4,264, including 380 sets of twins, 10 sets of triplets, and two sets of quadruplets.

“The PDP should also know about the ‘Orange Health Insurance’ (ORANGE HIS), which covers over 101,017 public servants and their dependents.

“Through this scheme, more than 460 surgeries have been performed. The informal sector, including private organizations and students will also henceforth benefit from this scheme.

“Shockingly, the PDP remains unaware that the State Executive Council, on 26th September 2024, approved the renovation of primary healthcare facilities in all 203 wards across the state.

“These renovations will include security fencing, staff accommodations, solar power installations, and boreholes to ensure the facilities are well-equipped and secured.

“How much more can I list? The PDP is oblivious to the purchase of new X-ray machines, the establishment of modern laboratories, the acquisition of 12 ECG and ultrasound machines, the creation of an ophthalmic theatre, and the now fully operational echocardiograph.”

Sowore, however, said “Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is undoubtedly committed to seizing every opportunity to enhance the state’s healthcare facilities, upgrade equipment, and, most importantly, improve service delivery.

“His dedication aligns with his clear pledge to prioritize the well-being of all citizens. There’s no question that the people of Ondo State hold the governor in high regard, and, in turn, his genuine care for their welfare, security, and health is evident.

“He understands the importance of not taking the trust and welfare of the people he loves for granted.”
