Today, November 16, 2024, marks a crucial day for Ondo as its residents head to the polls to elect a new governor.
The election is not only significant for the people of Ondo but also for the entire nation, as it tests the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the progress made since the widely criticised Edo State election in September.
Reports indicate a significant voter turnout at the National Boat Jetty in Igbonla, Ilaje Local Government Area, with officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) distributing materials to various units.
Voters are checking their names on the voter’s list, and Polling Unit Officers and National Youth Service Corps members are on hand to facilitate the electoral process.
The Ondo State Governorship Election is scheduled to hold across all 18 local government areas, with 18 candidates from 18 political parties vying for the position. Incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is seeking election to a full term, while former Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and 16 other candidates are vying for the top spot.
The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa) has called for a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process.
The organisation has deployed 90 accredited observers and 14 “soldiers of mouth” to track political disinformation.
As the people of Ondo exercise their right to vote, the nation watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful and fair election.
