Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General YD Ahmed, has commended members of the service corps that participated in the governorship election in Ondo.

The Director General made the commendation while monitoring the election across the state alongside other management team that were spread across all the Eighteen Local Governments Areas.

The NYSC boss, who was represented by the Director, Corps Welfare and Health Services, Mr. Omotade Ayodele Folorunso Benjamin said that the comportment exhibited by the corps members showed that there is still hope for this country.

Omotade, who covered both Akure and Ondo Zones and visited several Wards and Polling Units, admitted that he was fulfilled as the corps members did not disappoint management and that he would leave the state with fond memories of the gallant performance of the corps members.

“At the inception of the sensitive assignment, I have no doubt that my children would perform excellently, but you know as human beings, it is difficult to say uhuru until the task is completed. You have all done marvelously well and I want to thank you on behalf of the NYSC family nationwide for good service delivery”.

The Director of Corps Welfare and Health Services disclosed that all members of the service corps engaged did not compromise the integrity of the National Youth Service Corps, thus solidifying the synergy already in place between the Scheme and INEC.

He said that although the programme recorded huge success across the eighteen Local Governments, some areas recorded unpleasant scenarios as some hoodlums behaved in an uncivilised manner.

The number one Corps Welfare Officer nationwide berated the unbecoming attitude of some security personnel who abandoned their responsibility in the face of skirmishes perpetrated by the indigenes.

The timely arrival of the Director at the Polling Unit restored normalcy as he had an interface with the Divisional Police Officer and insisted that the Police team should provide adequate security cover for the corps members.

The representative of the Director General also recorded in few Polling Units (PUs) some Beavers that did not function effectively, and this slowed down the process of voting.

The passionate side of the representative of the Director General came to the fore when he received a distress call through the NYSC Situation Room from a corps member who became sick upon reporting to his Polling Unit.

Promptly, the Director, NYSC Southwest Area Office 1, Mrs. Olubukola Oluwaremilekun Abiodun, who was in that axis, with alacrity, took the sick corps member to a health facility that is accredited by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The corps member is recuperating as at the time of filling this report.

The corps members who participated in the election thanked the management of the Scheme for the opportunity to enhance democratic ideal in the country. They, however, appealed to the Director General to impress it upon Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve on their allowances as the present stipend is grossly inadequate to meet with the realities of the modern economy.
