A suspected transformer vandal met his waterloo in Anambra State on Wednesday as village youths captured and burnt him alive during a vandalization operation in the state.

It was gathered that the incident happened at Ifite village in Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state.

According to an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity, the suspects started the vandalization in the late hours of Tuesday and the operation lasted until about 2 am due to the enormity of their vandalism.

The eyewitness said that a villager secretly raised an alarm about the presence of the vandals in the community, prompting the youths to organize themselves with the local vigilante operatives and confront the vandals.

“The suspects, on sensing the presence of the villagers and the security, rushed into their cars and zoomed off. The first bus carrying four of them had escaped, but the people couldn’t catch them,” the eyewitness said.

He continued, “As the second bus was about to escape with the remaining three gang members, the people pursued them, and one of the local vigilantes punctured the tire of the vehicles with a gunshot.”

The eyewitness further explained that as the suspects tried to escape into nearby bushes, security operatives shot and crippled one of them, while the other two managed to flee.

However, later in the morning, one of the fleeing gang members was captured when he came out of the bush and started asking for directions back to Onitsha. The villagers raised an alarm, and the youth chased after him, eventually capturing him.

An informant who provided information about the transformers they came to vandalize was also arrested. The captured suspects were reportedly beaten by the villagers, and the one who had been shot earlier in the leg was burned alive by the angry mob.

A video circulating on social media corroborates the incident, showing the suspect consumed in a fire. The video also displays photos of the vandalized transformers and the stolen items recovered from the suspects.

As of the time of writing this report, the reactions of the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, were yet to be obtained as he had not responded to messages.
