One person has lost his life and many injured in a boat accident at Idiogba riverine community in the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The boat, which conveyed passengers, mostly market men and women, was said to be heading towards the Igbokoda Market from Awoye in the council area.
The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ondo State, Mr Olufemi Omole, in a statement, said the accident was caused by overloading and lack of life jackets.
The statement read, “The boat on Tuesday, August 3, left Awoye for the Igbokoda Market. The boat’s engine later failed and all efforts to repair it proved abortive; so, the wave of the sea took off the boat.
“The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Hammed Abodunrin, has therefore issued out a disaster alert cautioning boat or ferry workers in the riverine areas of the state to desist from overloading of passengers and goods, which could lead to a mishap.”
Omole said the commandant, who offered condolences to the deceased’s family, warned boat operators and travellers to be safety conscious due to the risks associated with sailing during the rainy season.
