The Primate of a prominent Orthodox Church in Nigeria has been accused of falsifying his master’s degree. According to documents obtained by our news organization, the Primate claimed to have completed his Master’s degrees at the Lagos State University, Ojo between 2000/2001. However, his academic transcript dated 11th March 2015 reveals a different story.

The transcript shows that the Primate’s year of admission was 2000/2001, but his year of graduation reads 1999/2000, a year before he supposedly started his program. This discrepancy has raised questions about the authenticity of his qualifications.

Furthermore, the report of the screening/election committee dated 19th May 2015 had earlier raised concerns about the Primate’s eligibility and recommended that he should step down until his authentic certificate was presented to the committee.

Despite these findings, the Primate has refused to resign, leading to widespread outrage and calls for his removal. The case has been taken to the Federal High Court in Lagos, with suit number FHC/C/CS/1124/24, and was filed on 28th June 2024.

The plaintiff is seeking several reliefs, including, A declaration that the 1st Defendant (the Primate) is not eligible and or qualified to remain in the office of the Archbishop/Primate of the church, due to his failure to present an authentic educational certificate, in accordance with the provisions of section 105 of the constitution of the church (2014).
An order directing the Primate to step down and vacate the office of the Archbishop/Primate, forthwith.

The Orthodox Church community in Nigeria is eagerly awaiting the outcome of this case, as it has sparked intense debate and concern about the leadership and integrity of the church.

“We are appalled by these allegations and demand transparency, the outcome of this case will have far-reaching implications for the church”, said a church member, who wished to remain anonymous. “Our leader must uphold the highest standards of integrity, and this scandal erodes our trust.” Many are calling for the Primate’s resignation, citing the need for accountability and ethical leadership.
