British acting legend Dame Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89.
The star of stage and screen for over seven decades reportedly passed away in a London hospital on Friday, as confirmed by a statement from her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
A statement by two of her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said: “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.”
Smith’s illustrious career began at the Oxford Playhouse in 1952, and she went on to become a towering figure in British theatre, Broadway, and film, winning two Academy Awards for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978).
