In a recent statement, I wish to extend an apology to His Excellency, Asiwaju Gboyega Oyetola, regarding a petition submitted to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by one of my supposed constituents.

It has come to my attention that some unprofessional young lawyers engage in the practice of writing petitions against public figures, including well-known individuals and private persons within the Organized Private Sector (OPS), and subsequently approach them to offer legal services for a fee, often extorting large sums. This practice is not a reflection of the character of the people of Ijesa North.

Ijesa North is proud of its legacy of producing highly regarded lawyers, many of whom have risen to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs). It is not inherently wrong for a lawyer to accept lawful briefs from any member of society or even the government. However, it becomes questionable when such briefs are intended to harm the reputation of individuals or their families.

As the saying goes, “Esuku to ba ti ri idi agbalagba inu igbo longbe. Omode ti o ba ti te aso agaba mo le nko…” which emphasizes that once someone has grown and gained experience, they should be careful in their actions, especially when they have the opportunity to affect others.

In Osun State, we have mechanisms in place to ensure accountability, such as the Public Accounts Committee in the State House of Assembly and the independent Office of the Auditor General of Osun State. These bodies are constitutionally empowered to scrutinize government expenditures and report accordingly. The Auditor General’s annual reports are laid before the State Assembly for review, and any necessary actions or indictments are made through that process.

While our Governors enjoy immunity during their term to protect them from distractions, it is important to allow the official auditing systems to function properly. If any person is found to be involved in wrongdoing through these reports, they should be held accountable through proper legal channels. However, resorting to blackmail or baseless petitions against our leaders is detrimental and uncalled for.

I also encourage support for those working diligently in government roles, such as the SUBEB Chairman and Chief of Staff, who are doing their part for the progress of the state. Those who claim to be working for our benefit may, in reality, be undermining our collective interests.

What Osun State needs now more than ever is peace and unity. How can we expect the Federal Government to trust us in collaboration as we approach the 2026 and 2027 elections if we cannot maintain a peaceful and professional environment?

I offer this statement in peace, with a call for professionalism and unity in our state.
