The political landscape in Enugu State witnessed a dramatic shift over the weekend as over 1,000 members of the Labour Party (LP), including a federal lawmaker and grassroots leaders, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hon. Sunday Umeha, representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, led the defection during a mini-rally at Ibagwa-Aka in Igboeze South Local Government Area on Sunday.

Umeha cited internal divisions within the Labour Party and the need to align with the ruling party at the centre as reasons for his move.

“I have already resigned from the Labour Party and registered with APC in my ward,” Umeha confirmed. There are a lot of advantages in plugging to the center.”
Chief Joshua Ogbonna, popularly known as “Father Father” and a major LP financier in Igboeze South, also defected along with the entire local government structure of the party.
APC State Chairman, Barr Ugochukwu Agballah, described the event as historic. “It is a total collapse of structure… I hand over to you the symbol of our party, our flag; I hand you the broom, which is an insignia of our party and with this broom we are going to sweep in good governance in Enugu State,” he declared.
He added, “APC is the Zion train of Enugu State… We are going to restore the dreams of our founding fathers.”
Ogbonna, speaking on behalf of the defectors, stated: “We are more than 1,000 that defected to APC today… Work begins now in Igboeze South.” He promised a ward-to-ward campaign ahead of 2027.
This marks a significant milestone for the APC, which has struggled to gain a foothold in Enugu State since its formation.
