The Oyo State Government has denied rumours circulating that it has allocated Agodi Botanical Gardens for a proposed housing estate, dismissing these claims as baseless and untrue.
Mr Williams Akin Funmilayo, the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, asserted that mischief-makers are attempting to distract the state government unnecessarily and undermine the commendable achievements it has accomplished so far.
Funmilayo emphasised the government’s commitment to reforestation and afforestation, categorically stating that Agodi Gardens will not be converted into a residential estate. He clarified that the extensive land earmarked for Baywood Estate does not include Agodi Botanical Gardens.
The Commissioner also revealed the state government’s plans to elevate the garden to international standards, positioning it to compete with other botanical gardens worldwide. He reiterated that the governor has not issued any directive for converting Agodi Gardens into a Housing Estate.
Recalling the history of Agodi Botanical Gardens, created in 1967, damaged by the Ogunpa flood disaster in 1980, renovated in 2012, and reopened in 2014 as a tourist attraction in Ibadan, Funmilayo emphasized its significance as a lasting legacy that the present administration cherishes. He assured that the Seyi Makinde-led government is committed to ensuring Oyo State remains a habitable place for all.
The Commissioner urged the general public to dismiss any rumours about the sale of Agodi Gardens, assuring that the proposed Baywood Estate will not encroach upon the Agodi Gardens area. He explained that the government’s intention to convert the forest into a housing estate aims to enhance security, addressing concerns about criminal activities and the loss of innocent lives in the region.
Funmilayo stated, “Any individual in doubt about the government’s plans in that corridor should visit the Ministry for further clarifications.” He concluded by urging the public to disregard information related to the conversion of Agodi Botanical Gardens into an estate, emphasizing the government’s determination to protect public places in the best interest of citizens and residents of the state.
