Since emerging as the winner of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show in 2022, life has been anything but smooth for Phyna.
The 27-year-old, known for her vibrant personality and fearless approach on the show, has faced a series of personal and professional challenges that have placed her under a microscope.
Behind the glittering world of fame and recognition, Phyna’s journey has been fraught with emotional turmoil, complicated family dynamics, and a struggle to balance her newfound celebrity status with her mental well-being.
Phyna’s rise to fame was meteoric, capturing the hearts of millions as she navigated the drama and pressures of BBNaija. But as the cameras stopped rolling, her life did not return to normal.
In fact, it became increasingly complicated. For someone who once appeared so fearless on national television, the reality star has struggled in private with deep-seated issues that have now surfaced in public.
The most recent shock came when Phyna took to X (formerly Twitter) days back, announcing that she was dropping her family surname, Otabor.
In an emotional post, she shared that “it has been proven that I actually have no family” and expressed confusion over how she came into the world. “Nobody knows how I came about,”
Phyna wrote, her words laced with pain and frustration. She spoke of her relentless search for answers, a journey that has led her to feelings of isolation and deep mental strain. “I can’t even describe how I feel or what to call what I’m going through right now,” she confessed.
Her decision to sever ties with her family comes as a culmination of years of unresolved emotional wounds. Phyna recalled how she was passed from one relative’s house to another during her childhood, never finding a true sense of belonging or parental love. In her post, she reflected on how she should have suspected something was wrong but was too young to understand the situation. “Going up and the way I was tossed around by relatives, I should’ve suspected something was wrong, but I was too young… omo my head wan tear!!!!!!” These words spoke to a deep-seated frustration that many might not have known existed beneath her outward confidence.
The emotional outburst follows a strained relationship with her father, Felix Otabor. Just a year ago, Mr. Otabor publicly claimed that Phyna had abandoned her family after her BBNaija win. He alleged that since her victory, she had cut off all communication with him and had failed to fulfill promises she made, including helping him with his financial situation.
Felix Otabor, an ambulance driver, spoke about how Phyna had promised to help him get rid of his old cars, with the promise of a better life, only for him to later claim that he was left without support.
“But since then, I haven’t seen her. And I don’t have a car again,” he said in an interview. The revelation of their strained relationship added another layer to Phyna’s growing sense of alienation.
Phyna’s response to her father’s claims was equally emotional, posting on Snapchat that she had been denied parental love throughout her life. “Growing up, I always hear you are not my daughter… yet I would beg for parental love,” she wrote.
“The truth is, I have always begged people to love me,” she admitted, adding that she had only now come to terms with her situation, declaring, “NO wonder I for say… guess ‘no an ORPHAN.’”
As Phyna opens up about her fractured family life, her fans are left to grapple with the emotional toll her experiences have had on her. The pressure of being thrust into the spotlight has compounded these personal struggles, as the demands of fame and the emotional exhaustion of navigating her complex family dynamics appear to have taken a toll on her mental health.
The reality star’s decision to take a step back and disassociate from her family publicly may be an attempt to reclaim some sense of control over her narrative—one that has, for too long, been dictated by the expectations of others.
But this isn’t the first time Phyna has faced mental and emotional challenges. As a reality star, she is no stranger to the public’s scrutiny, and with her fame has come an overwhelming amount of pressure.
From her vulnerable moments on the BBNaija show to her more recent revelations, it’s clear that Phyna’s journey has been one of constant emotional highs and lows. Fame, while offering opportunities and recognition, also brings its own set of challenges.
For Phyna, the weight of being in the public eye has perhaps intensified her internal struggles, leaving her to wrestle with her sense of identity, self-worth, and her place in the world.
Fame has brought with it expectations—from her fans, from her family, and from herself—that seem to clash with her private reality. In the face of all this, she has sought to remain strong, but the burden of fame, mental strain, and family estrangement is proving to be an overwhelming weight for the young star.
As she continues to navigate this tumultuous chapter of her life, one thing is clear: Phyna said she is more than just a reality TV star—but is a woman fighting for her emotional survival and seeking answers to questions about her identity that have been ignored for far too long.
