Ahead of the local government election in Plateau State slated for 9th, October 2024, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that the party is working round the clock to sweep the October 9th polls across the 17 local government areas of the state.

The State Chairman of the party, Hon. Rufus Bature, who made the declaration at the stakeholders meeting of the party in Jos, said the party has mapped out strategies and is also monitoring activities of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) to ensure a level playing field for contestants.

“As you are aware, October 9 has been slated for the local government elections, and as a party and all things being equal, we intend to not only participate in the contest but to clear the polls convincingly, based on our level of preparedness and the anticipated support from all of you, most especially the critical stakeholders.”.

He pointed out that right from the time PLASIEC announced its preparedness to conduct the local government elections, the State Working Committee (SWC) of the quickly appointed a desk officer and also assigned the organising secretary together with the welfare officer to closely monitor the activities of PLASIEC concerning the elections.

Hon. Bature, who said the challenges facing the party notwithstanding, stated that APC in the state is on the threshold of changing the political narrative if the party puts its act together and capitalises on the inadequacies of the PDP-led administration in the state.

“My fellow compatriots, we have a date with history. It is high time we woke up and took advantage of the fast-dwindling fortune of the PDP-led government by recalibrating and reconstructing our support for our party in order to regain our past glory.

“The PDP-led government is not unaware of its dwindling popularity and visibility in the state; hence, it is doing everything to stifle opposition voices in the political space. It is for no other reason than that that the Mutfwang administration is afraid of conducting free and fair local government elections, hence the attempt to totally replace the 2017 PLASEIC laws with an obnoxious one.”

He commended the APC members in the House of Assembly for outrightly rejecting the offensive provisions that the government attempted to introduce in the new law, which provided that all election results would only be announced in Jos, the PLASEIC headquarters.

The party chairman therefore enjoined members of APC, especially the stakeholders, to come together, put aside all differences and selfish interests, and put the interests of the party first, as well as taking over the affairs of the state as a cardinal target and goal.
