The Plateau State delegation at the recent United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) made significant strides in advocating for women’s economic empowerment as a fundamental path to sustainable development.

This was disclosed by Mrs Nanbam Danjuma, the Plateau State Coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Project Support Unit, during a telephone interview on Sunday.

Led by Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the delegation engaged in strategic sessions aimed at highlighting Plateau’s unique developmental needs while aligning with global efforts toward economic equity and the empowerment of women.

“The recent UNGA meeting was a significant success for us,” stated Mrs. Danjuma. “Our focus was on tackling systemic barriers to economic sovereignty, particularly those affecting African communities.”

She highlighted the Africa-America Institute’s session, which brought attention to historical injustices and discussed pathways to a fairer global economic system through educational and community-building initiatives. “Economic sovereignty and self-sufficiency are essential if we are to build resilient communities free from dependency on external forces,” she added.

A core part of the advocacy effort, according to Mrs Danjuma, was emphasised during the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum stakeholder session. This platform underscored that economic independence is pivotal for societal transformation and advancing gender equality.

“We must equip our women with the tools and opportunities to become economically independent,” she said. “Fostering women’s self-sufficiency and enhancing their roles in decision-making at both national and local levels paves the way for a sustainable future.”

Mrs Danjuma further disclosed that discussions with international investors were already generating promising interest in sustainable development initiatives in Plateau State. She expressed gratitude to Governor Mutfwang for his support and vision, stating, “With these partnerships, we are positioning Plateau State as a model for sustainable development in Nigeria, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for the state’s citizens.”
