Osun State Police Command has apprehended a 29-year-old man, Damilare Jacob, for raping  a female undergraduate from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Jacob, a commercial motorcyclist, is also accused of cutting the student’s pubic and armpit hair for reasons unknown and robbing her of her belongings.

The Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, disclosed this during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday, where the suspect was paraded along with others.

According to Opalola, “The student hired Jacob around 7:05 p.m. to transport her from Ile-Ife to Moro town. Instead of completing the journey, Jacob allegedly diverted into a nearby bush where he robbed the student of her belongings.”

She further stated, “The suspect allegedly raped the victim, cut her pubic hair, armpit hair, and head hair, and threatened to kill her if she reported the assault. The police are still investigating the case, and Jacob is expected to face charges in court.”

On July 26, 2024, at about 7:05 p.m., the complainant engaged Jacob, a commercial motorcyclist, to transport her from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Campus in Ile-Ife to Moro town. Upon reaching RCC junction along the Ilesa/Ibadan Expressway in Ile-Ife, the suspect diverted into a nearby bush and robbed her.

The police spokesperson listed the stolen items as follows: an iPhone XS Max valued at N320,000, a Samsung Galaxy A71 valued at N150,000, an Airtel Wi-Fi device valued at N10,000, and a cash sum of N20,000. The suspect also forcibly had carnal knowledge of the victim without her consent.

“The suspect also cut her pubic hair, armpit hair, and head hair, and threatened to kill her if she reported the incident,” Opalola said.

The victim was taken to the Police Hospital in Osogbo for assessment and treatment. Jacob was later arrested and confessed to committing the crime.

Opalola stated that the suspect would be charged to court once the investigation is complete.

She urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. She also expressed gratitude to the public and journalists for their cooperation and partnership.
