The Borno Police Command has arrested 97 individuals in connection with the recent “End Bad Governance” protests, which escalated into violence in the state.
The suspects were presented to the media at the command headquarters in Maiduguri on Saturday. They are accused of various offences, including violence, theft, mischief, and the display of foreign flags during the protests.
ASP Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the command implemented proactive measures to prevent a breakdown of law and order during the protests, leading to the arrest of these suspects.
Among those arrested were seven social media influencers, who were detained prior to the protest for allegedly inciting violence and making derogatory remarks against government officials, religious leaders, and traditional authorities.
Additionally, seven individuals were apprehended for hosting foreign flags, an act deemed a threat to national security.
The remaining 83 suspects were arrested in Maiduguri for vandalising property, rioting, theft, and looting.
ASP Daso reassured the public of the police’s dedication to maintaining peace and security through professionalism and quality service delivery. He urged the community to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
The “End Bad Governance” protests, which have been held nationwide, aim to demand better governance and an end to corruption in Nigeria.
The police warned that any acts of violence or lawlessness in the state would not be tolerated, and those found guilty would face legal consequences.
