Police have intensified their search for the gunmen who abducted the chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Benedict Akika, who regained his freedom Wednesday night after eight days in captivity.

The State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, in a statement by the Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed that Akika was freed after days of an intensive manhunt by the Command’s tactical, intelligence, and operational assets.

It was added that the search was extended to the adjoining forests across Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, Ore in Ondo State, and Uselu in Edo State.

According to the police report, the victim, upon his release, is undergoing treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Ibadan.

Tribune Online reports that Akika was not medically fit on the day he was abducted at his Olorunda Aba, Akobo residence in Lagelu Local Government Area.

This development and the rigors faced in captivity necessitated him being taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the police authorities have assured residents that they will apprehend the gunmen wherever they are hiding.

Additionally, the police reiterated their commitment to the protection of property and lives in the 33 local government areas of the state.

As of the time of filing this report, it could not be confirmed whether any ransom was paid before Akika regained his freedom.

In another development, family members, friends, and political associates have continued to visit his residence, expressing their gratitude to the relevant security agencies that ensured his release.
