Police confirm arrest of 81 ‘miscreants’ during protest in Sokoto

The Nigerian Police Force, Sokoto State Command, has confirmed the arrest of 81 persons allegedly disguising as protesters to cause mayhem during the first day of the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest in the metropolis.

The state Commissioner of Police,  Ali Hayatu Kaigama, in a statement made available to newsmen by the Command public relations officer, ASP Ahmad Rufai, assured law-abiding citizens of the state of adequate security and urged the good people of the Caliphate to avoid any form criminality during the protest.

According to the statement, “In a commendable display of swift action, professionalism and to public safety, the Sokoto State Police Command in synergy with other security agencies in the State had successfully apprehended eighty-one (81) miscreants.

“In disguise of peaceful Protest by the youths mostly young persons, the Protest start at the early hours of Thursday under a very close security watch until around 03:00 pm when it started becoming violent and unruly. 

“Billboards in front of Government House and Iron Rail demarcation of some Major roads within the state were vandalised. 

“In the quest to maintain law and order within the state and to avoid further breaking of shops and looting of warehouse among other nefarious activities, the joint patrol was able to make the arrest.”

The statement further said the  Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ali Hayatu Kaigama, while acknowledging the right of the residents of protest, frowned at the destruction of public infrastructures.

He however warned that any violent protesters will be arrested for destruction of public property and will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
