The Enugu State Police have identified the officer involved in the alleged murder of popular Ogene musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, known as Igbo-Jah, as Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph.
His photographs have also been released to the public.
Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu visited the family of the slain musician, who was reportedly shot by the inspector on Friday evening after visiting the Anti-Cult Tactical Squad headquarters.
The tragic incident has sparked protests among residents of Enugu, who are demanding justice and transparency regarding the identity of the officer responsible for the extrajudicial killing.
In response to the growing unrest, Commissioner Uzuegbu, accompanied by state government officials, met with the family to offer condolences and to help ease community tensions.
He reassured the grieving relatives and the people of Enugu that the investigation will be conducted swiftly and thoroughly, with justice ensured.
In a statement from the police command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the commissioner emphasised the police force’s commitment to accountability.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined organisation, and officers who violate the law will face appropriate consequences,” he stated, expressing his condolences to those affected by the musician’s tragic death.
The statement confirmed that Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph is currently in custody and will be held accountable under the law once the investigation concludes.
