The Zamfara State Police Command has reported the death of three armed bandits and the recovery of several firearms, including an AK-49 and a pump-action gun.
Newly-appointed Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Bunu, revealed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Gusau, the state capital.
Bunu, who promised to review the existing crime-fighting strategies in the state, expressed his gratitude to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, for finding him worthy of the appointment, saying, “I promise to do my best in protecting the lives and properties of the good people of this state.”
During the briefing, Bunu also commended the media for their collaboration and support towards achieving the command’s crime prevention activities, stating, “Without you, most of the successes achieved in our operations would not have been acknowledged by members of the public. Kindly do endeavour to cross-check your reports before publication.”
The Commissioner of Police identified armed banditry, reprisal attacks, kidnapping/abduction for ransom, and political intolerance as the prevailing security challenges in the state.
He pledged to employ community policing in the review of existing crime-fighting strategies, saying, “I will review the existing crime-fighting strategies and garnish them with community policing approach in line with the teaching, vision and mission of the Inspector General of Police to make them more effective in order to meet up with the challenges of modern day policing.”
Bunu also stressed the importance of useful information and actionable intelligence at strategic, operational, and tactical levels for maximum efficiency, stating that proactive and preventive measures would be conducted within the context of Police-Public partnership, participation, problem-solving, and community support to achieve the desired objectives. He revealed that these measures had already yielded positive results, citing the interception of bandits and the recovery of firearms during surveillance patrols.
Assuring the good people of the state that the police under his watch will discharge their responsibilities in line with professional ethics, Bunu said, “Human rights violations, corrupt practices, and other unprofessional conducts will not be tolerated.”
He appealed for continued support, cooperation, and collaboration from all and sundry by giving useful and timely information to the police on activities of criminal elements for prompt action.
