The Edo State Police Command has vowed to bring to justice all those responsible for the shooting incident on Airport Road, Benin City, on Thursday, during which an officer of the Command, Inspector Onuh Akoh, was shot dead.

While expressing shock at the incident and mourning the fallen officer, the Edo Police authority appealed to the people of the state to remain calm, assuring that the command was in charge of the situation with a view to preventing a reoccurrence.

A statement endorsed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, on Friday reiterated its commitment to ensuring peace and tranquilly in the state

“It is the principal thing to rightly inform the law-abiding citizens of Edo State and the general public of the shooting incident that occurred along Airport Road, Benin City, on July 18, 2024, at about 1300 hours by hoodlums suspected to be political thugs.

It was said that on the aforementioned date and time, Rt. Hon. Philip Shuaibu and Sen. Monday Okpebholo arrived at Benin Airport from the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, where their supporters rallied around to welcome them.

“Suddenly, some hoodlums suspected to be political thugs emerged from nowhere with guns and other dangerous weapons and started shooting sporadically.

“In the process, bullets hit a police inspector, Insp. Onuh Akoh, a member of the No. 45 Police Mobile Force Abuja attached to Sen. Monday Okpebholo.

“The police inspector gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital for treatment, and his body was deposited at the military hospital in Benin City.” The statement was announced.

According to the statement, “The Commissioner of Police Edo State, CP Funsho Adegboye, mni, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, and the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force commiserate with the wife, children, family, and friends of Inspector Onuh Akoh for the loss of our gallant fallen hero and pray that God will grant him eternal rest, Amen.

“The CP wants to use this sad moment to appeal to the general public to remain calm, continue to be law-abiding citizens, and go about their lawful businesses, knowing that the police and other sister security agencies are in firm control of the security situations in the state.

“He therefore warns criminal and incogitant elements in the state to desist from any act capable of breaking down the law and order or undermining the inviolable sanctity of the peace in the state.

“The CP reiterates the command’s inexhaustible commitment to protecting the lives and property of the law-abiding citizens of Edo State and the general public. He, however, vows to arrest, name, shame, and bring to book the perpetrators of this dastardly act,” the command was reassured.
