Police in Asaba have intervened in a protest staged by Okada riders against the Task Force, seeking resolution amidst escalating tensions.

A recent social media post by Morris Monye, a prominent Nigerian social commentator and community leader, has drawn attention to a disturbing incident in Asaba, Delta State.

Monye shared a video depicting police officers openly firing shots on a road in Asaba, raising concerns about the situation’s escalation. while another video showed a group of people blocking the road with motorcycles.

In the video, which quickly circulated on various social media platforms, Monye called upon the Governor of Delta State to intervene urgently, expressing dismay over the apparent lack of control over the situation.

His tweet prompted a response from DSP Bright Edafe, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Delta State Police Command, who provided some context to the events.

According to DSP Bright Edafe, the police response was triggered by a violent protest initiated by Okada riders.

The unrest reportedly stemmed from an altercation between the riders and the state task force the previous night, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals.

In response to this incident, the Okada riders allegedly mobilised in large numbers the following morning, engaging in acts of vandalism and assaulting individuals.

To contain the escalating situation, law enforcement personnel were deployed to the area, leading to a confrontation between the police and the protesting Okada riders.
