NIGERIANS have been called upon to pray for the successful implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s reform programmes geared towards the sustainable development of the country.

Minister of Environment, Dr Ishaq Salako, made this call at the 69th annual Islamic conference of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria, held in Ilaro, Ogun State.

At the event, where weddings were conducted for 21 couples in accordance with the Islamic law, Dr Salako explained how Muslims could play a key role in climate change advocacy across Nigeria and the world and quoted Qur’an 21:32 on preservation of the ozone layer to buttress his appeal to the faithful.

He said part of President Tinubu’s reform programmes was the sustainability of the environment, especially as regards reducing fossil fuel emission with the introduction of electric vehicles and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.

The minister said the government was committed to protecting the environment with all the resources available to it.

Dr Salako commended the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community for sustaining the legacy of moral and spiritual training of the young and the old through the annual Islamic conference for 69 years.

He recalled his younger days while attending the annual conference in Lagos at the old Muslim Teacher Training College, Surulere.

“Listening to discussions of various topical issues in Islam and contemporary challenges in the global space enriched my sense of commitment to Islamic values and service to humanity. My parents, Allah bless their souls, guided me through this path of Islamic devotion. Coming to Ilaro for the 69th Jalsa Salana (Islamic conference) is a homecoming,” he said.

The minister described the theme of this year’s conference, ‘Taqwa: Pathway to Justice and Peace’, as germane to addressing the challenges of insecurity and other social vices in the polity.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Ganiyu Hamzat, who represented the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, commended the support of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria for the government on the promotion of peaceful coexistence among religious groups in the state and for the re-election of Governor Abiodun.

Prince Abiodun was at the Ahmadiyya Islamic conference in December 2022 to seek the support of the organisation towards the last general election.

Prince Hamzat reiterated the commitment of Governor Abiodun to his promise to provide an electricity transformer and build a circular road within the conference ground. He said the transformer had been allocated and the building of the circular road had commenced.

Similarly, the Kogi State Commissioner for Special Duties, Ismail Yahaya, urged Muslims to participate actively in politics to be able demonstrate exemplary character in governance at all levels in Nigeria.

As a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at and public servant, he said he had been showing good examples as part of the government team in Kogi State.

He used the opportunity to appreciate the support of Governor Abiodun as the leader of the governorship campaign in the last election in Kogi State, where his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged winner.

He thanked his principal, Governor Yaya Bello, for giving him the opportunity to serve the Kogi people.

He also advocated harmonious coexistence among religious groups in the country.

The Amir of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at Nigeria, Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Alatoye, in a remark, stressed the need for the government and the people to inculcate the fear of God in all their affairs as captured by the theme of the conference.

Alhaji Alatoye read the goodwill message of the world leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hazrat Mosroor Ahmad.

Six lectures covering various topics were presented by Islamic scholars of the Ahmadiyya community across Nigeria.
