Sokoto State University has entered a new era of leadership as Prof. Mohammed Bello Yerima assumed the role of acting vice-chancellor, succeeding Prof. Bashir Garba, who is set to become the vice chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
The handover ceremony, which marked a significant milestone in the university’s history, was held on Monday, August 26, 2024, at the Senate Chamber.
In his inaugural speech, Prof. Yerima expressed his commitment to building on the achievements of his predecessor. He promised to work diligently towards enhancing the institution’s status, emphasising the importance of teamwork, open communication, and staff welfare.
Prof. Yerima also reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the entire university community and adopting an open-door policy to encourage staff input.
A statement by the university’s information officer, Zayyanu Shehu, noted that the acting vice-chancellor thanked the visitor to the university, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, Governor of Sokoto State, for finding him worthy of the appointment. He promised to justify the confidence placed in him.
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Garba, expressed his gratitude to the university community for their support and cooperation during his tenure, urging them to extend the same support to his successor. He highlighted achievements such as the completion of several infrastructural projects and securing full NUC accreditation for 18 undergraduate programmes.
The Commissioner for Higher Education, represented by Alh. Abubakar Muhammad Gagi, assured the university of the state government’s support and collaboration to enhance tertiary education in Sokoto State.
Prof. Attahiru Ahmad Sifawa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), offered goodwill messages to both Vice-Chancellors, wishing them success in their new roles. He expressed optimism that both leaders have the potential to excel in their new assignments.
The ceremony marked a new chapter in the history of Sokoto State University and Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, as they continue to strive for excellence in education and research.
