The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Tuesday approved the promotion of an additional 78 senior police officers to their next ranks during the continuation of its second plenary meeting in Abuja.
The meeting was presided over by its Chairman, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu. The plenary session, which entered its second day on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, saw the promotion of the 78 officers.
This was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by the Commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani. According to the statement, the Commission approved the promotion of 21 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police and 57 Chief Superintendents to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police.
On Monday, the Commission had approved the promotion of 11 Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General and 16 Deputy Commissioners to the rank of substantive Commissioners.
The statement further noted that some of the newly promoted Commissioners include former DCP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, who previously served as the DCP in charge of Administration and Finance for the Jigawa State Command.

He was also the immediate past Head of the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit and formerly Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Zone 7, Abuja.
The plenary session subjected officers to written and oral examinations. During the oral interviews, issues such as logistical challenges and manpower shortages were identified as significant constraints affecting various police departments, zones, states, areas, and divisional commands.
The officers urged the Commission to address these challenges in the interest of improving the Nigeria Police Force’s functionality.
Some of the officers promoted to Deputy Commissioners include those serving in areas such as Anambra, Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Kwara, and Zamfara states. Several others, including those in Abuja and Nasarawa, were also promoted to this rank.
The statement also highlighted that 57 Chief Superintendents of Police were elevated to the rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police. These promotions span various positions across the country, including commands in Plateau, Abuja, Anambra, and Enugu states, among others.
