The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, expressed concern over the adverse impact of the ‘sit-at-home’ order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on the growth and development of the South East region.
Hon. Kalu conveyed his observations in Abuja during a courtesy visit from a delegation representing Aba Creatives Collective, the organizers of the Aba Fashion Show, held annually in December.
In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, the Deputy Speaker commended the delegation for their initiative, emphasizing its alignment with the goals of showcasing the rich cultural heritage and artistic talents of the Abia people.
While recognizing the potential of the untapped fashion industry to drive economic growth, Kalu voiced concerns about the prevailing insecurity in the region. He noted that the ‘sit-at-home’ agenda of non-state actors had resulted in a loss of manpower, increased unemployment, and a decline in investor confidence.
Addressing the issue, Hon. Kalu urged the Igbo community to reject the ‘sit-at-home’ agenda and resist the fear propagated by “these faceless individuals who don’t mean any good for the Indigenes.”
He remarked, “The economic losses that the region has suffered due to the sit-at-home agenda have become impediments to regional growth, economic integration, and development. Fashion designers are feeling the direct impacts as investors shy away from the region.”
While expressing enthusiasm for the Aba Fashion Week, he called for a mindset free from sentiments imposed by non-state actors, emphasizing the industrious nature of the Igbo people. He urged the youth to reject the negative influence and misinformation, encouraging them to embrace their hardworking ethos.
Hon. Kalu affirmed his commitment to supporting the Aba Fashion Week, recognizing it as a potential catalyst for the betterment of Abia state and its vibrant fashion industry.
In conclusion, he urged collaboration and innovation to harness the power of fashion for the future development of Abia state, empowering its youth and showcasing its incredible talents.
Earlier, the delegation, led by Mr. Chinyere Akataobi, congratulated the Deputy Speaker on his emergence and sought his support for the upcoming Aba Fashion Show.
