The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for facilitating the release of minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests, adding that, without the Federal Government’s prompt intervention, many of these children might have lost their lives.
The Emir noted, “In interviews with a few of the children, many of them were students who attend school. They were picked up on the streets, not in the middle of any violent acts.”
Malam Sanusi made these remarks on Wednesday when he visited the state hospital, where the children were receiving medical treatment.
He stated, “We are here at the hospital to see our children who were brought from Abuja. Some of them have been in detention for three months, some in prisons, and others in police cells.”
The Emir praised the state government for the support extended to the children, saying, “I would like to begin by commending the state government for the manner in which they received these children and provided them with medical care.”
According to him, “From what I have seen, a few of them are in serious condition, but we pray to Almighty Allah for their recovery.”
He added, “During interviews, many of them, who are students, said they were picked up on the streets, not in the middle of any violent acts.”
“It is sad that they endured this kind of treatment, but we thank the presidency and the Federal Government for intervening and putting an end to their hardships,” Emir Sanusi said.
He further disclosed, “Without this intervention, many of them could have lost their lives.”
The Emir also expressed sympathy to the people of Kano for the loss of lives and property, saying, “I would like to again commiserate with the people of Kano and pray that this never happens again.”
He extended his condolences to the parents of these children, urging the authorities to focus on the adults responsible for inciting the unrest.
Emir Sanusi emphasised, “This riot happened in Kano, and people were identified—those who have been freely walking around, including in Abuja—while these children were subjected to untold agony and frustration.”
He concluded by saying, “In the interest of justice, when such incidents occur, we should identify the real culprits, arrest them, and ensure they face trial.”
