The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, revealed the plans of the 10th Assembly to enhance the existing ties between Nigeria and Switzerland in order to strengthen bilateral relationships between the two countries.
He made this known during an interactive session with the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Nicholas Lang, in Abuja.
Speaker Abbas expressed his delight at the visit, emphasizing that the Swiss diplomats were the first group of “foreign dignitaries to visit us here.”
He conveyed Nigeria’s readiness to partner with Switzerland in various areas, including legislative, economic, social, and cultural domains. He highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two countries to strengthen legislatures, economies, and cultural ties.
The Speaker commended Switzerland on its recent appointment with UNESCO and expressed Nigeria’s eagerness to learn from and partner with Switzerland.
He acknowledged the presence of numerous Swiss companies in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, and the significance of Nigeria as a major supplier of crude oil to Switzerland. He stressed the potential for further collaboration and mutual benefit between the two nations.
The Swiss Ambassador, Mr Lang, emphasized the importance of Nigeria to Switzerland as its main provider of oil. He expressed the desire for stronger bilateral relations and invited the House of Representatives to Switzerland for exchanges with the Swiss Parliament. The Speaker welcomed the invitation and expressed the House’s willingness to consider the proposal.
The Ambassador also extended an invitation to the Speaker and the House leadership to Switzerland’s National Day celebration in Abuja on August 1st. The Speaker expressed gratitude for the visit and looked forward to more mutually beneficial interactions with Switzerland.
