The Federal Government has called on Nigerians in the diaspora to return home and contribute to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

The Chairman of the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, made this appeal on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti while delivering the 12th Convocation lecture of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), titled: Diaspora Engagements for National Development.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasised the need for Nigerians abroad to bring back their skills and experiences to help address the socio-economic challenges hindering the country’s progress.

She highlighted that diaspora engagement is crucial for fostering national growth, urging Nigerians overseas to explore and utilise the numerous opportunities available at home.

According to her, the collective effort of Nigerians both within and outside the country is essential for development.

She remarked, “No foreigner will leave his country and help develop others.” Dabiri-Erewa also underscored that the professional expertise and global exposure of Nigerians in the diaspora, many of whom have excelled in various sectors, could serve as a catalyst for national development.

She further noted that NIDCOM is actively working to establish frameworks that will facilitate greater diaspora involvement in Nigeria’s growth efforts.

The founder of ABUAD, Afe Babalola, commended Dabiri-Erewa for delivering a “well-researched and detailed lecture” that focused on harnessing the potential of Nigerians abroad for sustainable national development.

Babalola acknowledged the country’s abundant human and natural resources and urged young people to reconsider leaving Nigeria for opportunities abroad.

“We are blessed with both human and natural resources,” he said, stressing that youth should avoid the lure of seeking “greener pastures” overseas.
