The Edo State governorship election has come and gone, but its implications will linger.

Here are seven key takeaways from the Edo guber election:

1. Close contest

The election was a closely contested one, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) winning 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winning 7 LGAs.

2. APC’s victory

Monday Okpebholo of the APC emerged victorious, defeating the other 17 political parties that participated in the poll.

3. PDP’s performance

Asue Ighodalo of the PDP garnered 247,655 votes despite boasting of incumbency power (Obaseki’s factor).

4. Labour Party’s struggle

Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) failed to win any LGA, securing only 22,763 votes.

5. Governor Obaseki’s reaction

Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed dissatisfaction with the election results, claiming democracy was under attack, despite his questionable democratic record.

6. Controversy surrounding results

Obaseki, alongside Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and PDP governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo, denied announcing collated election results from the state.

7. INEC’s role

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) played a crucial role in conducting the election despite allegations of corruption and ineptitude, with Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta serving as the Returning Officer.
