As part of measure to address the issue of climate change, Sokoto State Government in collaboration with Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), is set to flag off tree planting in 224 basic and primary schools across the state.
The state commissioner for basic education, Honourable Mohammed Tukur Alkali, stated this on Saturday in his remarks during a one-day workshop organized by AGILE in the state.
The one-day workshop theme” Training of trainers for the establishment of Eco-club in AGILE project Schools” was aimed at training of persons representing each of the schools.
The Commissioner who was represented by the the Director of female education board in the ministry, Professor Mustapha Namaka, commends AGILE for all the good work especially as it affects education, which he said is in line with the ministry’s vision.
“The state government has confidence and hope that AGILE will reawaken the state education in the provision of conducive learning encouragement.
“The Eco-club will not only improve the education in the state but also improve the environmental standard of the state.
“The state government is very concern in the effects of climate change as it affects every parts of the world ”
The commissioner, however, assured that the state government is fully ready to ensure the sustainability of the programme.
Speaking in his remarks, the state coordinator of AGILE, Dr Mansur Buhari, emphasise the effects of tree plantation in the state especially within the school premises.
He said the team chooses a dry season period for the tree plantation to instill discipline on how to ensure the success of the program in the students of the schools.
The coordinator further disclosed that as part of the plan to ensure the sustainability of the programs, he said AGILE has engaged School Based Management Committee (SBMC), in the running of the program.
He however called on the participants to ensure they participate actively in the training as well as ensure the measure is stepped down the training in their various institutions.
