The Sokoto State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in collaboration with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project, has trained Education Management Information System (EMIS) officers on data collection.
The one-day training was tagged, ‘Training of Trainers for the establishment of EMIS desk officers at 448 AGILE focus secondary schools and build the capacity on data generation, management and reporting’.
Speaking while declaring the training open on Thursday, the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mohammed Tukur Alkali, said education remains a major component of the nine-point smart agenda of the state governor.
The Commissioner who was represented by the Director, Senior Secondary School in the ministry, Dr Kabiru Garba, said the current administration has make a lot of commitment into the education sector in the state with the recent payment of WAEC and NECO fees by the state government.
“The state government as part of the plan to develop the education sector, teachers in the state are currently undergoing training to move them from analogue to digital level as it is in vogue in the developed world.
“We want them to be digitally educated so as to be able to withstand the current challenges in the education sector,” he said.
He, however, called on EMIS officers undergoing the training to ensure they remain focus on the training, while reminding them that they will have to step down the training to other members of staff in their schools.
He further appealed to the participants and people of the state to as a matter of patriotism, encourage their girls child not only to enroll, retain and complete secondary education but also to ensure they proceed to higher institutions of learning.
Earlier in his welcome address, Suleiman Musa, the system technical lead for AGILE projects, emphasised on the importance of data, which he said played a vital role in the delivery of quality education.
He said the importance of data cannot be overemphasize, “it is only when you have accurate and reliable data, that you can use it for effective decision making.
“Considering the nature and quality of data we have, that is why AGILE project is working on having EMIS officers at every school in Sokoto for us to have adequate, reliable and comprehensive data that can be use for effective decision making.
“For us to achieve this, we felt it is important to bring EMIS master trainers to train and refresh them and for them to go back to step down the training across the twenty local governments and 448 EMIS officers established in all AGILE schools,” he said.
