The Standard Organisation of Nigeria has destroyed 1,360 bags of low-quality and expired food items, tyres, and other counterfeit items worth over N20 million in Borno State.
Speaking during the destruction exercise in Maiduguri on Thursday, the state coordinator of the organisation, Engr. Mohammed Sani Abubakar stated that the food items destroyed are very dangerous to human health.

He noted that the quality of the law and counterfeit products destroyed were measured during the operational activities of the organisation in different locations within the state.
According to him, the organisation is following its laid-down guidelines to ensure that the products on the market possess the best qualities.
“We thoroughly check products to identify whether they are original or fake; if they are counterfeit goods or have expired, after an investigation for at least 3 months, we will take them to court for appropriate punishment”.
He urged the peddlers of fake products to desist from bringing counterfeit goods into Borno’s markets, warning that anybody caught with fake or expired products would be dealt with accordingly.
He explained that the organisation is carrying out market surveillance to find substandard products and to ensure quality for consumers in the state.
He also stressed that the organisation has embarked on an aggressive campaign against fake, counterfeit, and expired products in the markets, adding that “we are committed to bringing the best quality products to consumers in Borno, and we will continue seizing and destroying substandard products from some unscrupulous importers and marketers.
“We will not allow our people to take any products that are injurious to their health; not only that, the fake products have negative effects on our national economy; they should desist from destroying our economy by bringing counterfeit goods into the market because very soon we will start enforcing activities.
Also speaking, according to the state enforcement team leader of SON, Fatima Goni, the items we destroyed underwent different laboratory tests before they were seized; some of them were expired goods.
“The most annoying thing is that some of these items were children’s food, and they are life-endangering and unfit for consumption”.
She explained that the SON is ready to accept any complaint from customers about counterfeit goods, expired products, and substandard products and take appropriate action.
