THE Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has set a resolute tone for the new year, calling for urgent reforms and greater attention to the challenges confronting its members and the nation at large.
In a new year message to members, the National President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, outlined key priorities for 2025, emphasising the union’s unwavering commitment to improving members’ welfare, strengthening the nation’s education system, and addressing critical national issues.
Reflecting on the successes of the past year, Comrade Ibrahim commended members for their active participation in the historic 2024 National Delegates Conference (NDC), which ushered in a new National Administrative Committee (NAC). He reaffirmed the union’s dedication to fostering a stronger and more impactful organisation, built on resilience, solidarity, and shared vision.
SSANU spotlighted several pressing issues that require immediate government attention. Chief among them is the Tax Reform Bill currently before the National Assembly, which the union warns could have significant implications for workers’ welfare. “It is imperative that the voices of those impacted are heard,” said Ibrahim. He pledged SSANU’s active participation in shaping tax policies that promote inclusivity and fairness while safeguarding members’ economic stability.
The union also decried the ongoing electricity challenges crippling university operations. High electricity costs, Comrade Ibrahim stressed, undermine the core functions of teaching, research, and community service in Nigerian universities. He called on the federal government to prioritize resolving this issue, emphasising its direct impact on students’ education and the broader university ecosystem.
SSANU’s president urged the federal government, particularly the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, to uphold its promises to the union. “Fulfilling these commitments is critical to industrial harmony and the welfare of university staff,” he stated.
The union also expressed deep concern over the nation’s prevailing insecurity and economic challenges. Comrade Ibrahim called for intensified government action to tackle insecurity, describing it as the bedrock of sustainable growth. Rising inflation, a cash crunch, and technological inadequacies were also highlighted as critical issues affecting SSANU members, with a promise to advocate for reforms that alleviate these burdens.
As SSANU embarks on the journey ahead, Comrade Ibrahim called on members to remain united and resolute in the pursuit of fairness, equity, and justice. He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to advocating for policies that enhance the welfare of its members and modernise Nigeria’s education sector.
“With collective strength and solidarity, we can overcome obstacles and achieve greater milestones,” he concluded.
SSANU’s renewed call for action sets the stage for what promises to be a pivotal year, as the union champions the cause of Nigerian university staff and contributes to the nation’s development.
