French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasised that Europe should reduce its reliance on the US for security, and instead follow Donald Trump’s example in prioritising and defending the interests of his own population.
Macron also expressed his views on the potential implications of Trump’s presidency while addressing a gathering of European leaders, Macron
“We must not delegate forever our security to America,” Macron stated.
He further pointed out that Trump would rightfully “defend the interests of the American people,”
The Frenchman asked, “Are we ready to defend the interests of the European people?”
Trump has previously criticised European NATO members for not contributing their fair share to the alliance, even threatening to allow Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” about countries that fail to meet their obligations.
In line with Trump’s position, his running mate JD Vance echoed a similar statement during an interview last month. Vance stated that while the US under Trump would remain in NATO, it would insist that other member nations “actually carry their share of the defense burden” and no longer be “welfare clients.”
