The entire city of Owerri, the capital of Imo State, and its environs have been completely deserted by residents in compliance with the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ahead of their planned celebration.
With the reimplementation of this order in the commercial city, roads, markets, and streets have been left empty, as schools, motor parks, filling stations, commercial banks, and government offices have been locked down. Both commercial, social, and government activities were paralysed, with no vehicular movement reported in the city.
Hotels, supermarkets, eateries, and various business establishments were shut down, while some youths converted certain streets into makeshift football pitches.
Our correspondent, who monitored the situation in Owerri, reports that major roads in the state—such as Owerri/Mbaise/Umuahia, Owerri/Onitsha, Owerri/Port Harcourt, and Owerri/Aba—as well as other adjoining roads, have been devoid of the usual hustle and bustle.
A few stranded passengers were seen waiting on the roads for commercial buses and vehicles to convey them to their destinations, but no vehicles were available.
Prior to today, residents of the state engaged in last-minute shopping for foodstuffs and other household items to sustain them during the two-day sit-at-home order.
