Suspected herdsmen have allegedly killed a 36-year-old farmer, Sunday Ayeni, on his farm in Uba Oka, in Akoko Southwest Local Government Area, Ondo State.
The farmer was said to have been killed on his farm a few days after his farm was destroyed by the herdsmen and their cows, while the herdsmen were forced to compensate him for the damage.
The villagers suspected the herdsmen to be responsible for the killing of the farmer whose remains were found in the farm in his pool of blood as the suspected killer ripped his stomach open, leaving his intestines exposed.
Apart from killing the farmer, the suspected killers also killed his dog which followed him to the farm and was put beside the remains of its owner.
The villagers attributed the killing of Ayeni to the herders who were not happy with the money paid for the destruction of Ayeni’s farm a few days ago.
A source in the community explained that the herders paid for the destruction of the farmland following the intervention of the security operatives and community leaders in the area.
He said: “He went to his farm with his dog, as usual, yesterday but he didn’t come back on time and this led to a search party going to the bush.
“It was the search party who discovered his lifeless body in pool of his blood with his dog and cutlass beside him.”
A farmer and community leader Mr. Pius Imoru, said the entire community was in mourning mood and they were scared of going to their farms over fear of being attacked and killed by the herdsmen.
It was, however, gathered that a combined security team of the police and Amotekun Corps had been deployed to trail the assailants.
