President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to the Nigerian Tribune newspaper as it celebrates its 75th anniversary, recognizing its enduring commitment to responsible journalism and its impact on Nigerian society.
Founded on November 16, 1949, by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his wife, Hannah Dideolu, the Nigerian Tribune has built a reputation as one of the nation’s pioneering media institutions.
Over the decades, it has consistently championed the ideals of constructive nationalism, democracy, and social justice, contributing significantly to nation-building and upholding press freedom.
The President, in a statement by Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, commended the Nigerian Tribune’s ability to withstand attempts by state agents over the years to stifle its voice, praising legendary journalists such as Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Chief Tola Adeniyi, and Ayo Ojewunmi, whose courageous work helped shape the Tribune’s reputation.
“The Nigerian Tribune has proven itself to be a bastion of truth and an unwavering watchdog of society,” said President Tinubu.
He further emphasized the role of reputable publications like the Tribune in today’s fast-paced digital world, where “the internet enables anyone to be a ‘citizen journalist.’”
He noted that established news outlets like the Nigerian Tribune continue to serve as essential sources of reliable, balanced, and fact-based information.
President Tinubu expressed hope that the anniversary celebrations would honour the Tribune’s enduring legacy and inspire continued commitment to truth and credibility, values essential to a stable, progressive democracy.
He wished the Nigerian Tribune continued success in its mission to promote democratic values and contribute positively to Nigerian society.
