Controversial Nigerian socio-political analyst, Reno Omokri, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is taking a long time to propose a new minimum wage in the wake of the current hardship faced by many Nigerians, which is caused by the fuel subsidy removal.

Omokri lamented that the issue of restoring democracy to the Niger Republic has been the major priority and major discussion in the political space.

The People Democratic party’s chieftain, in a post on his Twitter page on Wednesday, said the issue of minimum wage should be a priority because of the current harsh economic conditions in the country.

According to him, the military coup in Niger is unfortunate, but Tinubu must make the welfare of Nigerians a priority.

Reno referenced the life-threatening situation of some Nigerians and the return of Ikoyi bridge suicide jumpers, which he termed a sign of a rise in hopelessness among the citizens.

He tweeted, “It is taking President Tinubu too long to come up with a new minimum wage. In my opinion, he should have had the framework ready before he was sworn in.

“It is a priority as Nigerians face some of the harshest economic conditions of our national life.

“The Niger situation is unfortunate. Democracy must be restored there. And the President is handling it superbly. But he must not be distracted from his number one priority, which is the welfare of Nigerians.

“There are Nigerians who are facing life threatening situations because their take home pay can no longer take them home. Their children face malnutrition and stunted growth. And palliatives are not enough. Palliatives are an ad-hoc solution. Nigerian needs a long lasting solution to poverty.

“We are beginning to see a return of Ikoyi Bridge suicide jumpers. And that is a sure sign of the rise in hopelessness amongst the citizenry.

“The removal of fuel subsidy, though a necessary sacrifice which I support, has led to food inflation, and without affordability of food and other necessities, many Nigerians will face a cost of living crisis.

“There can be no delay. We need a new and improved minimum wage from President Tinubu, even if he must work with the National Assembly to cut short their holiday or even postpone it.”
