Recently released data from the International Energy Agency has ranked Nigeria as the fifth African country in electricity production in recent years.

According to the report made available by TRT Afrika, a Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) subsidiary, Nigeria, along with some other African countries, continues to rank higher in electricity production despite many nations struggling to supply sufficient electricity for their populations.

In this article, Tribune Online examines the list of the top 10 African countries in electricity production and provides insights into their energy outputs.

1. South Africa

South Africa is the continent’s powerhouse, generating 244,383 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. This high production capacity places the country 23rd globally.

2. Egypt

Egypt follows closely, producing 209,677 GWh of electricity each year. Ranked 24th globally, Egypt’s robust electricity output supports its growing population and booming economic activities.

3. Algeria

Algeria is the third-largest electricity producer in Africa, with an output of 85,390 GWh. Ranking 40th globally, Algeria’s production is crucial for its industrial sector.

4. Morocco

Morocco ranks 60th in the world in terms of electricity production, with 42,561 GWh. The country has made significant investments in renewable energy, particularly solar power, which contributes to its position as the fourth-largest electricity producer in Africa.
