The Commander, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Kevin O. Aligbe, has described the Workshop on Effective Leadership Development as one of the major scheduled training activities of the Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army, for the 2024 training year.

Maj. Gen. Aligbe stated this while declaring open the four-day Training and Doctrine Workshop, held from September 2 to 6, 2024, with the theme: “Enhancing Doctrine and Combat Development in the Nigerian Army for Effective Responsive Leadership in a Joint Environment” at the TRADOC Nigerian Army Auditorium, Minna, on Tuesday.

According to him, it is appropriate to note that the workshop is coming at a time when all efforts in the Command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) are geared towards “Transforming the NA into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force towards achieving our constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.”

Aligbe noted that the transformation of the Nigerian Army, which began in earnest a few years ago, has gone through various stages of development. He emphasized that the dynamic approach and pragmatic planning of the Chief of Army Staff are a manifestation of his desire to improve the Nigerian Army and transform it into a professionally responsive force.

Furthermore, the Commander, TRADOC, stated that the Command philosophy is being pursued vigorously, and hence the workshop on leadership development is seen as one of the platforms to actualize it. He added that the resource persons for the workshop were carefully selected to reflect on effective leadership in the military within a joint environment.

“The objective of this workshop is to enhance the leadership skills, abilities, and capabilities of officers and soldiers operating within a joint environment. It will also provide valuable tools and strategies for effective team management and improved decision-making abilities.

This is to create an enabling environment for the exchange of ideas with our erudite and seasoned resource persons on effective leadership by Nigerian Army personnel in a joint setting,” he declared.

Also, in his welcome address, the Chief of Doctrine and Combat Development for Doctrine, Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Jamiu Jimoh, said the objective of the workshop is to provide valuable tools and strategies for effective team management, tailored to enhancing decision-making abilities in the military profession.

He added that it would further assist all Commanders at all levels on how to lead their subordinates effectively during military engagements while fostering cohesion for better operational outcomes.

Maj. Gen. Jimoh, represented by the Director of Doctrine, Maj. Gen. Anthony Obiwulu, reminded the participants that effective and pragmatic leadership is crucial for the success of any military operation within a joint environment.

He highlighted that it is important for seasoned officers of the Nigerian Army to imbibe the spirit of good leadership towards their subordinates, both in peacetime and wartime, to achieve positive outcomes in their operations.

Jimoh also pointed out that, based on the Nigerian Army’s experiences over a decade of fighting insurgency, this workshop will not only expose the participants to effective and visionary leadership but will better position and equip them to conduct future training and operations effectively.
