In a devastating incident on Wednesday, tragedy struck near the University of Ilesa’s campus as a container truck collided with a car, resulting in the death of the female driver and critical injuries to her passenger.
The deceased, identified as university employees Mrs. Beatrice Fanimokun and Mr. Salako, were reportedly commuting home after work when one of the three truck drivers in a convoy lost control, causing the collision that ultimately crushed their vehicle.
Emergency responders, including the Federal Road Safety Corps and local law enforcement, worked tirelessly for around three hours to retrieve the victim’s body from the wreckage and transport it to the hospital’s mortuary.
The incident prompted concerns of potential unrest among the university’s students, requiring intervention from the institution’s management to maintain calm and prevent any potential disturbances.
In response to the tragedy, university officials have pledged to address the student body and assure the community of ongoing efforts to ensure safety on and around campus.
Reports indicate that the trucks involved in the accident were transporting cocoa and cashew nuts to Lagos and belonged to the Ilesa-based Faseru Produce Company.
Mrs. Fanimokun, a senior member of the university’s library staff, leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to the institution.
Efforts to obtain a statement from the police regarding the accident were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
